The Genkit Story
Genkit founders, Nick and Carolyn Tones, began their alternative energy journey after moving to Portugal nearly two decades ago and deciding to grow fig trees on their remote Barragem de Santa Clara (St Claire Lake) property.
The huge cost of hooking up to the national electricity grid prompted them to devise a solar energy based system to supply power to their home and irrigation equipment. While the fig trees grew, the Tones' alternative energy system attracted much interest in Portugal and southern Spain, so they refined and began to market the product. Today this popular standalone power system is known as the Gonooble.
Genkit Nelson Limited was officially formed in 2000 to supply on-grid and off-grid alternative power systems to New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. The demand for remote area power supply has steadily grown and Genkit has built up a solid reputation in the market as first-class providers of sustainable, renewable and backup electricity solutions.
