Mini-hydro, micro-hydro, small scale Hydro Power ~ NZ

Hydro power is an age-old method of energy production. It is the leading source of renewable energy, and essentially produces no carbon dioxide or other harmful emissions, in contrast to burning fossil fuels.

Hydro Energy ~ the natural, renewable, power source

Prior to the widespread availability of commercial electric power, hydropower was traditionally used for irrigation, milling, and textile manufacture.

Small scale hydro or micro-hydro power has been increasingly used as an alternative energy source, especially in remote areas where other power sources are not viable. Small scale or micro hydro power systems can be installed, with an elevated intake in a small river or streams. The water intake is designed to have little or no discernible environmental effect on things such as fish migration.

Micro or Mini Hydro Renewable Power Systems ~ suited to New Zealand conditions.

Genkit's hydro systems provide small-scale electricity production for remote or rural power supply requirements.

With our micro hydro systems, water is captured via a filter / intake structure and passes downhill in a pipeline to the turbine. The water exits the pipe under pressure through a nozzle and strikes a water wheel (runner). The force of which spins the runner connected to a generator producing power.

Most of our small scale, or mini hydro power systems make no use of dams or water diversions. Our micro-hydro systems only require a tank filled by the river through a filtered intake, or a small weir across a river or creek.
